You're Not Alone: What We Know About Family and Independent Businesses in 2026
How big this population really is, and why it matters.
If you own an independent or family business, it can feel like you're the only one carrying the weight of it, the decisions, the risk, the responsibility for people who depend on you. You're not. You're part of one of the largest, most consequential groups in the American economy, even if it doesn't always feel that way from the inside.
Generation X makes up about 47% of small business owners nationally, and Baby Boomers another 37%. Together, that's 84%, more than four out of every five small business owners in the country, built by people in roughly the same stage of life and business as you. Millennials currently make up about 16% and growing, meaning the next wave of owners is already stepping in behind you.
Regionally, this population isn't just large, it's organized. The Goering Center for Family & Private Business at the University of Cincinnati exists specifically to support family and private businesses across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, which tells you something important: this isn't a scattered handful of businesses figuring things out alone. It's a real, connected community, with institutions built specifically to serve it.
We bring this up not to throw numbers at you, but because we think it matters for how you see your own business. A few things worth sitting with.
You're not behind because you haven't figured everything out yet. Most owners in your position haven't either. The Gallup research on succession planning alone shows that a striking number of business owners, even successful ones, don't have a fully worked-out plan for what's next.
The challenges you're facing are the same ones nearly every business like yours is facing right now, at the same time. Finding new customers, modernizing outdated systems, thinking about what happens down the road. You're not uniquely behind. You're in the middle of a shared moment.
There's real infrastructure built to support businesses like yours, locally and nationally. Chambers of commerce, business advisory groups, centers like Goering, and yes, agencies like ours that specifically understand what it means to build and protect something with your name on it.
You built something real. It's not something you're doing quietly and alone, even when it feels that way. There's a whole community of businesses figuring out the exact same things you are, right now, and no shortage of ways to find them.
